Federal Member for Mackellar, Jason Falinski, today welcomed more than $7.5 million in additional disaster funding to assist New South Wales local councils affected by the East Coast Storms and Floods of April 2015.
Mr Falinski said the funding was being provided under the Commonwealth-State Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA) and will assist the Northern Beaches Councils in covering costs sustained during the devastating storms and floods in April 2015.
The additional funding will go to cover the cost of removing debris from public areas and restoring community assets. The costs incurred by the Northern Beaches local counils in the aftermath of the April 2015 storms were immense. I am proud that the Federal Government can provide this much needed support to the Northern Beaches Council to assist it meet those costs, so that rate payers do not.
The enormous amount of green waste from the storms and floods required these councils to undertake significant and expensive clean-up and debris removal operations. Under normal disaster funding arrangements, such clean-up costs would not be eligible for funding but with the support of the Australian Government the Northern Beaches Council will be able to cover their extraordinary costs.
The funding announced today is in addition to a range of disaster assistance made available by the Australian and NSW governments immediately following the disaster.
