Member for Mackellar Jason Falinski today announced The Coalition Government will make the largest single investment – half a billion dollars – in the protection of the Great Barrier Reef.

“The World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef is the planet’s greatest living wonder,” Mr Falinski said.

“Like reefs all over the world though, the Great Barrier Reef is under pressure.

“A big challenge demands a big investment – and this investment gives our Reef the best chance.”

$444 million will be provided to the Great Barrier Reef Foundation to:

  • improve water quality;
  • tackle the coral-eating crown-of-thorns starfish; and
  • make the Reef more resilient to heat stress.

$56 million will be provided to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and the Department of the Environment and Energy to:

  • expand environmental management and compliance operations; and
  • support this significant additional investment in the Reef.
