The Pitt Dialogue - Cybersecurity and Big Data Analytics

The Pitt Dialogue is a series of public lectures on significant contemporary issues, delivered by speakers with distinctive expertise. This particular seminar will feature Dr John Selby.

Dr John Selby is a member of the Optus-Macquarie Cybersecurity hub at Macquarie University who studies the spillover effects of the Internet on business, including privacy and cybersecurity issues. He previously worked as a commercial Internet lawyer at King & Wood Mallesons, and as in-house counsel at Telstra.

In 2006, Dr Selby was recognised by the Lowy Institute as one of Australia’s “New Voices in Technology & International Relations. In 2009, he was a Postel Center Fellow at the University of Southern California’s Information Sciences Institute. In 2013, he was appointed as an ISOC-AU Fellow to the United Nations Internet Governance Forum and in 2016, he was a Visiting Professor at the University of Zurich and the University of Oslo.

Dr Selby has influenced numerous public debates relating to Internet policy in Australia. He led public discussion about whether to introduce a right to be forgotten in this country. During the debates about metadata retention, he was quoted on the front-page of the Sydney Morning Herald and his policy submission was cited in the final report issued by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security. Most recently, his policy submission was extensively cited in the Commonwealth Department of Communications’ Review into the governance of the dot-au domain name space.
